Crenicichla sp. Fire Spot Venezuela
Crenicichla sp. Fire Spot Venezuela
Two days ago we were able to import a single specimen of pike cichlid , which we have never seen before. The animal for sure belongs to the rambling relationship of Crenicichla saxatilis; however, no reports on a species exist that has red instead of black markings on the body. Our specimen - most probably a male - is currently about 15 cm long. We believe that is has been collected near the city of Puerto Inirida in Venezuela.

Discus wild Heckel blue Uatuma & wild blue Paraconi
High season for wild Discus!
Discus wild Heckel blue Uatuma
Once more we received a large number of fantastic wild collected Discus. The fish are large, healthy and very stable. Now is the best time to order these fishes, for there is high season in Brazil. This week we recommend especially the wonderful blue Discus from Paraconi (there do not exist only the red ones!) and the gorgeous Heckel from Uatuma.

Satanoperca rhynchitis
Satanoperca rhynchitis
We received beautiful German bred specimens of this rare eartheater. Until the species has been described in 2012 under the name of Satanoperca rhynchitis it was known in the hobby as Satanoperca sp. "Red Lips". The fish develop the pretty red lips only when adult, so we add a picture of an adult specimen to this newsletter.

Chilatherina sentaniensis
Chilatherina sentaniensis
Male
This wonderful rainbowfish seems to glow from inside! Sadly the species is very close to extinction in the wild due to environment pollution. This species is only found in Lake Sentani in New Guinea and some of the affluents of that lake. Luckily Chilatherina sentaniensis is kept and bred by rainbowfish enthusiasts and there is a chance that the species can survive at least in aquaria. Buying that fish does not only mean that one obtains a beautiful aquarium inhabitant, but buying that fish is also an act of species protection!

Thorichthys-Week at Aquarium Glaser
The genus Thorichthys originates from Central America. Formerly the fish were grouped in the catch-all genus Cichlasoma. The best known species is the fire mouth cichlid, Thorichthys meeki. All Thorichthys are very beautiful. Compared with other cichlids, Thorichthys are also quite peaceful. Currently we have a good number of species of Thorichthys in stock, which we want to introduce to you this week.
Thorichthys aureus
This cichlid inhabits the atlantic slope of Central America. Her it can be found in rivers in Guatemala and northwestern Honduras. The dainty pastel colours of the fish remind one very much in the ram. The maximum length of Thorichthys aureus is 15 cm in males, females always stay smaller. Our specimens (German bred) are 5-7 cm long and have just reached their maturity.
Thorichthys ellioti
There is some controversy discussion on the correct name of that cichlid. Some scientists think that it represents a valid species (eg T. ellioti), others suppose that the correct name should be T. maculipinnis and suppose that T. ellioti is a synonym. In any way the fish are very beautiful. Initially the species originates from Mexico (system of the Rio Papaloapan). The maximum length of Thorichthys ellioti is 15 cm in males, females always stay smaller. Our specimens (German bred) are 4-6 cm long and have just reached their maturity.
Thorichthys helleri
Our quite young specimens of T. helleri only give an idea how beautiful the fish will be when fully grown. One could call this cichlid, which originates from the atlantic slope of Mexico "Yellow Firemouth Cichlid". The maximum length of Thorichthys helleri, as in its congeneers, is 15 cm in males, females always stay smaller. Our specimens (German bred) are 5-7 cm long and have just reached their maturity.

Top rarities in stock
Some species of ornamental fish become only very occassionally imported. The reasons are various, but most often the collecting sites are far from those where common ornamental fish can be collected. This makes the animals very expensive. Here are two of such fish.
Panaque suttoni
The Blue-eyed Panaque was in the 1980ies one of the most common loricariids in the trade. By the way: the correct scientific name is Panaque suttonorum. For unknown reasons the fish is hardly available nowadays. There are, however, a lot of rumours. Some say that an ecological catastrophe appeared, others tell that a madman has poisoned the river and killed all fish and one more rumour says that the Colombian drug mafia controls the area where the fish appears. May it be as it is: luckily the species cannot be extinct in the wild for we still obtain some specimens now and then. Currently we have a beautiful individual with bright blue eyes in stock that is about 20-25 cm long.
Serrasalmus cf. altispinis
Piranha systematics are still very enigmatic. However, there is a number of aquarium enthusiasts that fell in love with that type of fish and so sometimes even rare species can be imported. Last week we received a shipment of Serrasalmus manueli from the Rio Xingu that contained a single, very unusual different specimen. The combination of the following charcters: deep body, large humeral spot, and pattern of comparably small spots give a hint for the species Serrasalmus altispinis. That species can reach - according to the original description - a size of about 20 cm. Our specimen is currently 12 cm long.

Hyphessobrycon cf. melanostichos
Hyphessobrycon cf. melanostichos
For the first time ever we can offer this attractive new tetra. Our specimens are German bred ones. Hyphessobrycon melanostichos has been described scientifically only in 2006. Until now the fish is known only from the upper reaches of the Rio Tapajos, namely a small river called Rio Doze de Outubro. If our fish are identical with H. melanostichos cannot be said for sure so far, but they have many similarities with that species.
Hyphessobrycon cf. melanostichos are very lively tetras. They reach a maximum length of about 3-4 cm. When the fish are displaying their proximal part of the back becomes bright red as well as the fins do. Keeping these fish in aquaria is pretty easy and comparable to that of other small tetras.
Lexicon: Hyphessobrycon: ancient Greek, means "small Brycon". Brycon is another genus of tetras. melanostichos: ancient Greek, means "with a black band".
Suggestion of a common name: Fireback-Blackband-Tetra

Corydoras cf. kanei C142
Corydoras cf. kanei C142
C142 is a very beautiful, peaceful and comparatively small species of Corydoras: it becomes around 5 cm long. It is said that C142 originates from the Rio Tapajos. Corydoras kanei is quite similar to C142, but the latter is distinguished from the former by the bright golden spots on the neck and the operculum. Such colour marks are typical for schooling fish, because the can be seen very good under water and make it easy to stay in contact with conspecifics.
Lexicon: Corydoras: from ancient greek, means „with helmet and spear“. This refers to the strong armor and fin spines. kanei: dedication name for Kane Grant, the son of the first describer.
Suggestion of a common name: Golden neck cory

Hypostomus luteus
Hypostomus luteus
A year ago we received the offspring of the first successful breeding of Hypostomus luteus (see http://www.aquariumglaser.de/en/archiv.php?news_id=474). Now we received again a small number of specimens. The fish are bigger than the first ones and show nice colours. Many of them show the first signs of adult coloration, starting in the caudal fin. The fish are B-grade and show slight fin deformations.

Kryptopterus vitreolus / Kryptopterus bicirrhis
A new name for the Ghost glass catfish
This extraordinary catfish is a popular aquarium inhabitant for more than 80 years now. The scientists Heok Hui Ng and Maurice Kottelat found out that it has been mis-identified over eight decades as Kryptopterus bicirrhis or K. minor and that the Ghost glass catfish represents a so far undescribed species. They named it as Kryptopterus vitreolus now.
Kryptopterus bicirrhis looks very different. It is not that translucend. K. bicirrhis becomes about 15 cm long which is much more that K. vitreolus (about 7 cm). The K. bicirrhis we show here was a by catch in our K. vitreolus which we currently offer in show size. K. minor originates from the island of Borneo and has in all probabilty never been imported as an ornamental fish. K. vitreolus originates from Thailand only.
Lexicon: Kryptopterus: ancient Greek, means "with hidden fin". bicirrhis: Latin, means "with two filaments". minor: Latin, means "small". vitreolus: Latin, means "small glass".

Tridensimilis brevis
Tridensimilis brevis
Currently we received the cute freeswimming dwarf glass cat Tridensimilis brevis from Peru. The fish attains a maximum length of 3 cm. It belongs to the notorious candiru relationship, but is no blood sucker at all. This tiny catfish is that translucent that it is possible to observe the way of the food from the mouth to the vent. T. brevis can be kept problem free with small tetras, but one should better keep no Corydoras - especially C. pygmaeus - along with Tridensimilis.
Lexicon: Tridensimilis: Latin, means "similar to Tridens"; Tridens is another genus of catfish. brevis: Latin, menas "short".
Suggestion of a common name: Mini Glass catfish

We received a very special fish from Peru: Anchoviella alleni, one of the very few representatives of the sardine family (Engraulididae) that lives exclusively in freshwater. The species attains a maximum length of about 10 cm. Our specimens have about half of that size. The supposed males are more slender, slightly larger and the swim bladder has a different shape, compared with the supposed females.

Hyphessobrycon sp. Red-Blue Peru Tetra
Hyphessobrycon sp. Red-Blue Peru Tetra
This tetra, which attains a maximum length of about 4-5 cm, is without any doubts one of the most attractive members of the tetra family. Obviously the species has not been described scientifically yet. It originates from Peru, but no details regarding the origin are currently available. Only the future can show, if this fish belongs to the genus Hyphessobrycon; regarding the behaviour it also shows a lot of similarities to the Purple emperor tetra (Inpaichthys kerri). Sometimes the "Red-Blue Peru Tetra" is also confused with Hyphessobrycon nigricinctus, the Peruvian emperor tetra, which has, however, a much narrower lateral band.
The Red-Blue Peru-Tetra is a peaceful animal that can be kept in any community tank with other peaceful fish. Our specimens - currently we can offer fully grown ones - are German red.
Lexicon: Hyphessobrycon: ancient Greek, means "small Brycon"; Brycon is another genus of tetra. Inpaichthys: dedication name for the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazonia (INPA); ichthys is ancient Greek and means "fish". kerri: dedication name for W. E. Kerr, at the time director of INPA. nigricintus: Latin, means "with a black band".

Rasbora paucisqualis
Rasbora paucisqualis
It does not happen very often that we feel unable to determine an imported species at least roughly. But when a few weeks ago a shipment containing very small (about 1 cm) Rasboras from Thailand arrived we could name the fish only provisionally "Rasbora sp. Dwarf". In the meantime the fish have grown happily and now we can say the importation brought a species in our fishhouse we have never been able to import before: Rasbora paucisqualis. This charming species attains a maximum length of 3-4 cm.
Regarding coloration Rasbora paucisqualis is intermediate between the typical rasboras with a dark longitudinal stripe and the harlequin rasboras (Trigonostigma). However, nothing is known so far about the spawning behaviour of the species. It would be very interesting to know wether this species spawns in a normal "Rasbora-like" matter or upside-down like the Trigonostigma species.
In any case the nice species is an enrichment of the assortment of available species of dwarf fish from southeastern Asia.
Lexicon: Rasbora: after a common name of one of the species used in Bengal. paucisqualis: means "with few scales". Trigonostigma: ancient Greek, means "with a triangular spot".
Common name: Largescale rasbora

Pterophyllum sp. Jatapu
Pterophyllum sp. Jatapu
Breathtaking, large, wild collected angelfish originating from the Rio Jatapu in Brazil arrived on wednesday. These animals have a very distinct black spot in the dorsal fin. We have never seen before such markings in angelfish. Possibly the angels represent a new, undescribed species. Even though the photo can - of course - not yet reflect the real beauty of the fish we want to present to you, dear reader, this little sensation as soon as possible.

Bryconops cf. caudomaculatus
Bryconops cf. caudomaculatus
For the first time ever we could import this attractive tetra from Venezuela. Currently 12 species of Bryconops are described from Venezuela, but most of them are known from preserved specimens only. So our determination is only tentative.
In any case the fish are very pretty; we suppose that they may reach a maximum length of about 6-7 cm, our fish are currently 4-5 cm long.
