Aquarium Glaser-GmbH
Bonjour,
Cichla orinocensis
We currently have this amazing large cichlid in good numbers and an ideal size in stock. The specimens orginate from Venezuela and are 4-6 cm long. This is a perfect size for the acclimatisation of these fish in home aquaria.
Cichla orinocensis is a typical member of its genus and can reach a maximum size of about 70 cm. Maturity is usually attained at a length of 20-25 cm. All species of Cichla are - as far as it is known - openbrooders and perform a bipartental broodcare.
Fish that are as small as ours can be fed with white mosquito larvae and bloodworm; however, feeder fish are ideal. From a size of about 10 cm on the young Cichla can be fed with frozen smelt as the basic food. Smelt can be used even for largest specimens.
For our customers: C. oronocensis has code 636551 on our stocklist. Please note that we exclusively supply the wholesale trade.
Adult specimens of Cichla orinocensis
Lexicon: Cichla: this is a name that has been used in ancient Greece for a nowadays unknown fish. orinocensis: menas "originating from the Rio Orinoco".

Re: Aquarium Glaser-GmbH
Parasphaerichthys ocellatus
This extreme rarely imported species originates from Burma. The charming fish attains a length of only 2-3 cm. This is the only species of anabantoid fish whose way of reproduction is still unknown. The only other member of the genus, P. lineatus (see http://www.aquariumglaser.de/en/parasphaerichtys-lineatus_de_1211.html) is a bubblenest builder although the eggs look like the eggs of mouthbrooders.
The surfaces of the eggs of P. ocellatus also have the very characteristic structures of eggs of mouthbrooding species (this is known from dissected specimens). But as long as no one has ever bred the species successfully in an aquarium nobody will know for sure how they do "it". Maybe you, dear reader, can solve this miracle?
In the habitats of P. ocellatus appear heavy day-night changes of the water temperature. The species lives in muddy, shallow pools. By day water temperature rises easily up to 25-28°C, while during the night the temperature becomes as low as 15°C. The metabolism of the tiny fish is adopted to that changes. So one should try to imitate them (for example by switching off the heater along with the lamps) otherwise the fish will become very sensitive for various diseases on a long time sight.
For our customers: the fish have code 441233 on our stocklist. Please note that we exclusively supply the wholesale trade.
Lexicon: Parasphaerichthys: ancient Greek, means "similar to Sphaerichthys". Sphaerichthys is another genus of fish. ocellatus: means "bears an ocellus".
Suggestion of a common name: Ocellated dwarf chocolate gourami

Re: Aquarium Glaser-GmbH
Snakeheads Special
Channa obscura
Channa obscura, placed in the meantime in a different genus, namely Parachanna, originates from Africa. The species attains a length of about 40 cm. Currently we have 4 cm long babies in stock that we received from Nigeria. The fish have code 111002 on our stocklist.
Channa gachua
All the other species we have in stock still belong to the genus Channa and originate from Asia.
We received adult Channa gachua from India (Bengal). The species attains a length of 10-15 cm and is a mouthbrooding species. These fish have code 409084 on our stocklist.
Channa pulchra
For the first time ever we can offer German bred Channa pulchra. This is a medium-sized species (20-30 cm) that originates from Burma. Our specimens are currently 12-15 cm long, show very nice coloration and have code 409245 on our stocklist.
Channa punctata
Another Indian species is Channa punctata. That fish is not as colorful as the former, but quite peaceful (compared with other snakeheads) and does not grow very big. Common size in the wild is 15-20 cm. Our specimens come from Bengal and are 8-10 cm long. They have code 409252 on our stocklist.
Channa stewartii
The species Channa stewartii is found only along the Himalaya in the north of India. Here a lot of different colour varieties are known. The fish we currently have in stock (code 409303) are 10-12 cm long (they may reach up to 25 cm) and have a very nice metallic blue-green basic coloration.
Channa sp. "Dwarf Fire & Ice"
A real dwarf and breathtaking colourful is the Channa sp. 'Dwarf Fire & Ice'.. We have not seen them larger than 12 cm so far. This beauty has code 409363 on our stocklist.
Channa diplogramma & Channa micropeltes
The next two species are real giants that can reach at least 80 cm in length. Angling records are by far larger! Channa diplogramma (code 409153) originates from the south of India and C. micropeltes (code 409204) from Thailand. Both species still show at a size of 10-12 cm their baby-coloration, which is very attractive: broad orange-red stripes along the body. Both species look so similiar at that age that it was thought more than 100 years that both would belong to the same species. However, the adults looks completely different. C. diplogramma becomes creamy white all over the body with black or red dots on the scales. C. micropeltes gets a blue-black back and a silvery belly as adult fish.
Channa diplogramma
Channa micropeltes
Channa sp. "Laos Fireback"
Finally, we have another scientifically still undescribed species in stock, which is obviously a close relative of C. gachua: Channa sp. 'Laos Fireback'. It seems that this fish becomes a bit larger than typical C. gachua, but for sure the fish we currently have in stock (code 409394, size 15-20 cm) have reached already maturity.

For our customers: the animals have code 485903 on our stocklist. Please note that we exclusively supply the wholesale trade. Available in very limited numbers only!

Guppy Euro Moskow Blue
Currently we have wonderful Guppys of the Moskow sport in stock. This variety has a black body with a blue shine. The latter flashes each time the fish swims.
For our customers: the ish have code 419173 on our stocklist. Please note that we eclusively supply the wholesale trade.

Physoschistura cf. elongata
For the first time ever we can offer this charming dwarf loach from the North of India. Maximum length of the species is only 4.5 cm. The fish is undemanding and completely peaceful.
For our customers: the animal has code 454882 on our stocklist. Please note that we exclusively supply the wholesale trade.
Lexicon: Pysoschistura: combined from the ancient Greek word for "bladder" and Schistura, which is the name of another genus of loach. Refers probably to the anatomy of the air bladder. elongata: Latin, means "prolonged, protracted".
Suggestion of a common name: Firefly loach

Platystacus cotylephorus
We received this beautiful banjo cat from Brazil currently. The species represents by far the most desirable member of the family. The fish becomes approximately 30 cm long and thus should be kept in larger tanks. In contrast to most other banjo catfishes - which usually do not move if possible - this species is comparetively lively.
Platystacus cotylephorus inhabits the lower reaches of rivers and even tolerates brackish water. It can be kept, however, also in pure freshwater, but the pH should be neutral or slightly alcalic in that case and the water should be medium hard, not soft.
Basically speaking the species is very peaceful, although very small tank inhabitants may be eaten. The banjo cats accept readily any type of frozen food, most do even feed on granulated dry food; Tubifex are regarded as an delicatecy.
One of the characteristic features of the species is the fact that there do not exist even two specimens with exactly the same coloration. There are no differences between the sexes known for sure, but it is said that females have a rather brown basic coloration while males have a black one. In our fish quite different shapes of the dorsal fin can also be observed which possibly proof to be a way for sexing the fish.
Although the species has not been bred successfully in aquaria so far it is known that the female attaches the eggs on the underside of its belly until they hatch. This is an unique case of broodcare in fishes.
For our customers: the fish have code 280603 on our stocklist. Please note that we exclusively supply the wholesale trade.
Lexicon: Platystacus: ancient Greek, combines the words "broad" and "needle"; referring to the shape of the body. cotylephorus: ancient Greek, means "bearing cups", referring to the honeycomb-like skin structure on the belly of the females, in which the eggs are deposited.
Suggestion of a common name: Longtail banjo cat

Betta pi
We received a small number of this very rare, mouthbrooding fighting fish from Thailand. The peaceful species becomes ablout 9 cm long.

Myleus schomburgkii WILD
Finally we managed to import again a small number of the beautiful Myleus schomburgkii from Brazil. Currently the fish are 7-10 cm long; the sexes just start to differentiate externally. In males the anal fin gets an additional konvex lobe. For more information on the species, please check: http://www.aquariumglaser.de/en/myleus-schomburgki_de_1319.html

Silurus glanis
The Wels catfish or Sheatfish (Silurus glanis) lived initially in eastern Europe and central Asia, but was spread as a food fish over large regions by humans. The species belongs to the largest species of freshwater fish known so far. Current records mention up to 3 m long fish that are as heavy as 150 to 250 kg. The largest Wels catfish described ever in a scientific publication (to the best of my knowledge) was 4.875 m long and had a weight of 295 kg (Kessler, K. T. (1856): Zur Ichthyologie des südwestlichen Russlands. Bulletin de la Société Impériale des Naturalistes de Moscou v. 29 (pt 1): 335-393.) This giant was caught in the River Dnjepr near by the city of Krementschug.
Of course most Wels catfish stay much smaller; nevertheless these fish are wonderful eyecatchers for public aquaria or ponds. All Sheatfish in the trade are artificially bred ones. In the wild, the male guards the eggs (up to 20.000 per kg from a female spawner) and the small offsping that reminds one in tadpoles.
Wels catfish are predators; juveniles feed on all type of frozen and live fishfood and accept also readily granulated food. Larger specimens feed on fish and amphibians, adult ones also catch waterfowl and rats etc..
Wels catfish are completely frost resistant, but interestingely the physiological temperature optimum of the species is between 25 and 27°C - pretty much for a so-called "coldwater fish"! However, this makes young Wels catfish easy to maintain aquarium inhabitants, their tank does not have to be cooled at all. We want to take the opportunity to remind our readers that it is strictly forbidden to release any type of aquarium fish (even native species!) in the wild, if the fish is not wanted anymore. This can have a serious impact on the ecology!
For our customers: the fish have code 881003 on our stocklist. Please note that we exclusively supply the wholesale trade.
Lexicon: Silurus: after the name for catfish used in ancient Greece. glanis: this word also means "catfish" in Neo-Latin (the Latin of the scientists used between 1500 and 1900).
Common name: Wels catfish, Sheatfish
Leporellus vittatus
Finally we were once more able to import some of the very rarely offered Leporellus vittatus from Brazil. This extraordinary species attains a length of approximately 25 cm and belongs to the headstander tetra relationship. However, in Leporellus the air bladder is mostly reduced and so the fish live strictly bottom orientated.
Our animals are currently 10-12 cm long. Like all headstanders, these fish establish a hierarchy among themselves. They look most beautiful in strongly lightened aquaria with a good current. Leporellus feed readily on any type of fishfood, but all headstanders have a type of teeth that are specialized for feeding on plant material. So one should offer the fish a great variety of plant material for a proper feeding.
For our customers: the fish have code 265725 on our stocklist. Please note that we exclusively supply the wholesale trade.
Lexicon: Leporellus: diminuative of Leoprinus, eg "small Leporinus"; Leporinus is another genus of tetra. vittatus: Latin, means "striped".
Suggestion of a common name: Yellow-golden Striped Tetra

Xiphophorus hellerii MARLBORO WAGTAIL

Crenicichla cf. lugubris Red / Spotted Face
We receive for some time now spectacular Crenicichla from the Rio Atabapo in Venezuela (see, for example, http://www.aquariumglaser.de/en/archiv.php?news_id=409). Now we were able to import one pair of another new pike cichlid of that region, which looks like a mix of Crenicichla cf. lugubris "Red Atabapo" and C. lenticulata (see http://www.aquariumglaser.de/en/crenicichla-lenticulata_en_1401.html for a picture). The female can be easily recognized by the white band in the dorsal fin.
Currently our specimens are 20-25 cm long. It is very likely that they will grow a bit longer, but more than 30 cm total length have not be to expected.
For our customers: the fish have code 670736 on our stocklist. Please note that we exclusively supply the wholesale trade.
Lexicon: Crenicichla: ancient Greek, means "Cichla with a comb"; Cichla is another genus of cichlid. lugubris: Latin, means "belonging to mourning". lenticulata: Latin, means "with spots that look like lentils".

Re: Aquarium Glaser-GmbH
Serrapinnus sterbai
Currently we imported this new, very nice and interesting tetra again from Brazil. Obviously the species originates from the Araguaia/Tocantins basin in Central Brazil. In the German aquarium magazine "Amazonas" (Issue 35, May/June 2011, p. 79) this fish is named "7 Rays Mint Tetra" what is adopted initially when we imported the fish for the first time in 2011.
In April 2012 the species has been described scientifically as Serrapinnus sterbai by Axel Zarske, who dedicated the new species to Günther Sterba, author of some of the best known aquarium handbooks worldwide, on the occassion of Sterba´s 90th birthday .
The fish become about 3 cm long and the males can be easily recognized by the very strange looking laterally broadened anterior anal fin rays (seven, thus the popular name) and the saw-like keel structure at the lower end of the caudal peduncle. Structures of that kind can be found in the genera Spintherobolus and Serrapinnus. However, Spintherobolus has no adipose fin at all, while there is a well developed adipose in the 7 rays mint tetra; so Zarske placed the new species in Serrapinnus.
Regarding keeping the new species proved to be undemanding so far. The fish are typical, very lively schooling fish.
For our customers: the animals have code 290803 on our stocklist. Please note that we exclusively supply the wholesale trade.
Lexicon: Serrapinnus: Latin, means "saw-fin", referring to "the peculiar shape of the anal-fin rays of mature males." (Malabarba, 1998). Spintherobolus: from ancient Greek, means about "emitting sparks", probably referring to the lateral line organ.
Suggestion of a common name: 7 Rays Mint Tetra

Copella vilmae
It took us quite long to manage an importation of this much looked for tetra, but now we were at last successful and a small number of C. vilmae reached us from Peru. The animals were given immediately to one of our breeders. In contrast to former importations this one contained a lot of females.
We now hope that in the near future we will be able to offer German bred ones and that many hobbyists have the opportunity to keep this wonderful fish in their home aquaria.
Lexicon: Copella: dedication name for the biologist Edward Drinker Hope (1840-1897); Copella means "little Copeina". Copeina is another genus of tetra. vilmae: dedication name for Vilma Schultz, the wife of Harald Schultz, who was the first collector of the species.
Common name: Rainbow Copella

Danio rerio WILD
Literally everybody knows the zebra fish. It is one of the best researched species of animal of planet earth. Uncounted millions of zebra fish swim in the aquaria all over the World and enjoy their keepers. However, allmost all of them are captive bred. The breeders often do not take too much care that the parent fish belong to the same species or variety. So the zebra fish in the pet shops often are hybrids of D. rerio and D. frankei or mixed sports of veiltail, golden ones etc.. This is not a problem at all except for people who search for a pure wild strain of zebra fish for their aquarium.
We import on a regularly basis wild collected specimens of the zebra fish from India (around Calcutta). This week we received extraordinary nice and large specimens - simply wonderful fish!
For our customers: the fish have code 407713 on our stocklist. Please note that we exclusively supply the wholesale trade.
Lexicon: Danio: after a popular name for this group of fish in Bengal. rerio: the native specific name for the zebra fish in Bengal. frankei: dedication name for H.-J. Franke

Zebra Otocinclus
Currently we have two different varieties of Zebra Otocinclus (Otocinclus cocama) from Peru in stock.
One of these varieties can be offered quite often. The fish have a comparatively dense pattern of black bars on a light basic coloration. They have code 274154 on our stocklist (see also http://www.aquariumglaser.de/en/otocinclus-cocama_de_1342.html).
The other variety is available only occasionally and in small numbers. It is characterized by only few, but broad stripes. This fish has code 274174 ("Zebra Yarapa") on our stocklist. The pattern of this variety fits better to the one that was described in the scientific description of O. cocama than that of 274154.
Both varieties are very beautiful and hardy aquarium fish.
Please note that we exclusively supply the wholesale trade.
